When Andrea and Darren Best took over a 25-year-old refrigeration business, they were not only taking the leap of faith into entrepreneurialism, but they were also taking on an established brand with a solid reputation of providing exceptional products and services to long-time residential and commercial clients for a quarter of a century, so there was a lot on the line.

Not only were the Bests up for the challenge, over the last 24 years, they have been able to shift the Acadia Refrigeration brand to fit their vision, while growing the brand, in the process.   The couple, along with their team, have the Kentville, N.S. family owned and operated company focusing on looking after their customer’s needs for the next 50 years and beyond.

It is interesting how our business careers sometimes come full circle to show us where we always belonged.  Darren’s first start as a technician was with Acadia Refrigeration and the previous owner.  As with most people wanting to take the jump into entrepreneurialism, deciding to start or purchase a business did not come easily for either Darren or Andrea.

Darren had always wanted to be self-employed and a business owner and thought that this was the opportunity to make this want a reality.   It was a big decision. Some would say life changing at the time for Darren or Andrea, as the couple had two little boys, but they decided that it was the right decision for their family and purchased the company in 1997.  They knew that it was going to be an adjustment for their young family however, Andrea says, “We chose to make it work.”

Andrea goes on to say, “The decision ended up being a fantastic choice for our family. We work hard, we are proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve grown things,” as Acadia Refrigeration is now one of the valley’s largest refrigeration contractors.

Now, 24 years after they purchased it, Acadia Refrigeration now employs the entire Best family as the boys are now grown and have come back into the fold and work here making it a true family affair.  “We each bring something different to the table. Darren has a keen mechanical mind and an integrity that people are drawn to. I would say I am more analytical which lends well to the roll of handling the finances and human resources,” Andrea says.

The company was well-established and was family-run before being purchased by Darren and Andrea, and ironically the pervious owners were a husband-wife team as well.  When the Bests first got the business, it wasn’t about changing things, but making things work for them.

“The company was well-established and was family-run before us, done by a husband-wife team as well. We just wanted to make it ours, and we came in with some fire in our belly,” Andrea said.

Being in any business for more than a half century brings a lot of change, and the Refrigeration & Air Conditioning sector has seen more than most, when it comes to changing technologies.

“Being a small local company in a rural area requires us to be diversified in our approach. We can’t be narrow-minded in the projects we do,” Andrea said.

Their work goes from residential heating and cooling all the way to industrial refrigeration projects.  They can do everything from putting a heat pump in your home, to servicing commercial walk-in coolers for restaurants and convenience stores.  They also provide service for recreational facilities such as ice rinks and curling clubs.

Acadia Refrigeration also provides industrial refrigeration to many industries and with being located in the heart of the Annapolis Valley’s agriculture and farming region it should come as no surprise that they offer products and services for vegetable and fruit storage along with commercial and retail refrigeration solutions, including working with natural refrigerants such as ammonia and CO2, for the meat and fish productions plants and pie facilities in the area.

The Annapolis Valley is also known for its amazing cidery, craft beer and distilling industries and of course its well established wine industries.  Acadia Refrigeration are well known for providing custom built chillers and other custom design and built refrigerating and air conditional solutions, with in-house engineering and technical know how, for those currently in and coming into these growing industries which has been a great addition to their growth as a business and the economic growth of the Annapolis Valley region itself.

Darren and Andrea proudly acknowledge that they have a solid team around them and that without their friendly, well trained and hard-working technicians and office staff they would not have been able to take the brand to where it is today or plan for where they want to take it tomorrow.  “We are very fortunate to have guys and gals who bring different skill sets to the group which allows us to be well diversified in our services,” adds Andrea.

It goes without saying that you do not stay in business for over 50 years without repeat customers.  Andrea adds, “We’re so grateful for this and we don’t take it for granted.  We know that our customers have a choice, and we work hard to continue to be that choice. We are proud to have these long-term working relationships and a personal connection with our clients. Being part of something that touches many aspects of life for other people, businesses and community groups is very satisfying.”
