Whether you’re a winter enthusiast or a summer adventurer, this picturesque corner of Nova Scotia offers a unique blend of relaxation, adventure, and inclusivity. We had the opportunity to chat with Allison Langley, General Manager and a key figure at Ingonish Chalets, who shared insights into the challenges and triumphs of running a business in this beautiful, remote part of Canada. Allison Langley’s journey with Ingonish Chalets began in 2016, but it wasn’t until recently that she and Alyssa Humphries truly took the reins of the family business. Their vision is clear: to create a welcoming, inclusive, and peaceful retreat where everyone can feel at home. As you approach the property, one of the first things you’ll notice is the rainbow flag – a symbol of their commitment to inclusivity and a safe environment for all guests.

“Our primary focus is inclusivity and safety. When guests pull up, we want them to feel that this is a place where they are welcomed, no matter who they are. It’s about offering a space where people can relax, be themselves, and feel at ease,” explained Allison. This philosophy has become the foundation of their operations, reflected in the way the property is maintained and the inviting atmosphere they’ve worked hard to create.

Allison Langley’s journey at Ingonish Chalets has been nothing short of transformative. What started as a housekeeping position has now evolved into a leadership role she never expected. Reflecting on her early days at the chalets, Allison shares, “I began working as a housekeeper, never imagining that I would one day be managing the business. But over time, I grew alongside it, learning everything from the ground up. It’s been an incredible journey.”

Her path intersected with Alyssa’s in 2020, and the two quickly formed a bond. “We instantly clicked,” Allison recalls. Alyssa became a full-time member of the Ingonish Chalets team in 2021 and assumed the role of Director just two years later, bringing fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the business. When the previous manager left in the fall of 2023, Allison stepped into the managerial role, drawing on her extensive frontline experience. “I had worked in every aspect of the business, from housekeeping to running my own cleaning business, so I was the one who knew the ins and outs. It wasn’t something I planned for, but it felt like a natural next step,” she explains. This shift allowed her to merge her hands-on knowledge of the chalets with her growing leadership skills.

But what truly sets Allison and Alyssa apart is their unique partnership. “We are like Yin and Yang,” Allison says with a smile. “Our different backgrounds and perspectives allow us to balance each other out. We’ve both had diverse job experiences, and our neurodivergent ways of thinking bring something special to the table. We may see things differently, but that’s what makes us a strong team.” Their collaboration isn’t just about filling roles – it’s about creating a space that reflects who they are. “Neither of us had planned to become entrepreneurs, but here we are, two Queer neurodivergent women running a business in a rural area, and that’s pretty cool!” Allison adds.

Their story is one of empowerment and inclusivity, and it’s one that continues to inspire. “We’re not just running a business; we’re creating a peaceful environment that reflects our values, something we can share with others,” says Allison.

Together, Allison and Alyssa are not only reshaping Ingonish Chalets but also redefining what it means to create a business with heart – one that is driven by authenticity, inclusivity, and a shared vision of peace and connection.

“We live here, we breathe this space, and we want our guests to feel as comfortable as we do when we’re here,” Allison said. While the transition hasn’t been without its challenges, the personal touch and dedication to improving the guest experience are evident in every corner of the business.

Running a business in rural Cape Breton presents its own unique challenges, especially for those in the tourism industry. The biggest hurdle? The seasonal swell of tourists during the summer months, followed by the quieter winter months.

“The biggest challenge we face is the dramatic shift in tourism from summer to winter,” Allison explained. “While we do have winter enthusiasts and workers here for projects, the off-season can be tough.” Fortunately, Ingonish Chalets has developed solid relationships with local workers who come to the area for long-term projects, such as hospital renovations and roadwork. These partnerships help ensure a steady stream of business during the winter months.

“It’s a blessing to have built such strong connections with people who rely on the area for their work,” Allison said. These relationships have become an important part of their off-season strategy. However, the reliance on summer tourism remains a challenge, especially as operational costs in rural areas continue to rise.

Another factor is the limited accommodation options in the area during the winter. Many tourists come to Cape Breton for skiing and other winter sports, but the region still struggles to attract a larger winter tourism base. “We’re hopeful that projects like Ski Cape Smokey will help boost winter tourism in the future,” Allison shared.

The accommodations at Ingonish Chalets reflect the brand’s commitment to comfort, inclusivity, and the idea of a home-away-from-home. The property features a variety of options, including a three-bedroom cottage, several two-bedroom cottages, and a five-room motel. Each space has been thoughtfully designed to offer guests a peaceful retreat without sacrificing the comforts of modern living.

The three-bedroom cottage is the largest on the property. With two bedrooms upstairs – each with a double bed – and a master bedroom on the main floor, the space is perfect for larger families or groups. The cottage also offers a spacious living area, a full kitchen, and a recently renovated bathroom. “This year, we made a few upgrades to the cottage, including adding an air fryer because, honestly, who can live without one?” Allison laughed, highlighting the business’s focus on providing modern amenities to make guests’ stays more comfortable.

The two-bedroom cottages are a favorite for smaller groups or families. These units provide ample space, full kitchens and cozy living rooms. “Our guests love the cozy feel, but also the spaciousness of the cottages,” said Allison, noting that many visitors appreciate the privacy and relaxation the accommodations offer.

The motel rooms are designed for maximum comfort. “Our motel rooms are far from ordinary,” Allison explained. “They feature large, open spaces with kitchenettes, dining areas, and cozy living rooms with futons for additional sleeping arrangements.” The rooms also feature rustic pine log accents, giving them a warm, inviting feel that matches the natural beauty of the surroundings.

One of the standout features of Ingonish Chalets is the attention to detail in its amenities. Each accommodation is equipped with full kitchens, heat pumps for year-round comfort and covered verandas, allowing guests to enjoy the outdoors no matter the season.

“We’ve tried to create an environment where guests feel like they have everything they need to truly unwind,” Allison said. “We even have barbecues and picnic tables available for outdoor dining, so people can make the most of the natural beauty around them.”

Sustainability is also a priority. The chalets use dispensers for shampoo and soap, which not only reduces waste but also aligns with the property’s commitment to sustainability. “We use natural brands for our amenities, because we want to be mindful of both our guests and the environment,” Allison noted, highlighting the property’s eco-conscious approach.

While Ingonish Chalets provides a comfortable and welcoming place to stay, the surrounding area is rich in adventure and natural beauty. Whether you visit in winter or summer, there’s always something to do.

In the winter, visitors can enjoy skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing at the nearby Cape Smokey ski hill. The region’s snow-covered trails also provide excellent opportunities for cross-country skiing and winter hiking. For those looking for something a little different, snowmobiling rentals are available nearby, offering guided tours through the snowy landscape.

“In winter, it’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Once you embrace the season, there’s nothing quite like it,” Allison shared. “The beaches in winter are incredible, often completely deserted. There’s something magical about walking along the shore with snow-capped mountains in the distance.”

In the warmer months, the area transforms into a peaceful haven for relaxation. The region’s quiet beaches become the perfect spot for long, scenic walks or moments of quiet reflection. “The beaches in winter are a hidden treasure, but in summer, they offer a serene environment where you can unwind,” Allison said.

For those seeking adventure, hiking is an essential activity in Cape Breton. From the well-known Cape Breton Highlands to lesser-known spots like the Gypsum Mines, the area offers an abundance of trails that showcase its stunning landscapes. “Hiking here is something everyone should experience. Every trail offers something new and beautiful,” Allison said.

Ingonish Chalets is more than just a place to stay – it’s a destination that embodies the spirit of Cape Breton. With its welcoming atmosphere, modern amenities, and surrounding natural beauty, the chalets provide a retreat for all seasons and all people. Whether you’re visiting to ski in the winter or explore the trails in the summer, Ingonish offers a refreshing escape that will leave you feeling rejuvenated.

“We want people to feel like they’re coming home when they stay with us,” Allison said. “Our goal is for every guest to feel comfortable, safe, and at peace, surrounded by the beauty of Cape Breton.”
